Silverplate Resources - Caring for your silverplate
The silverplate Yesterwares sells ranges from about 60 years old to 160 years. We choose the best pieces with minimal to
zero heel wear and silver loss. We tell you that so you know just how durable silverplate can be.
If you’re only going to use your silverplate for special occasions, try to wrap it in clean cotton, acid-free tissue, or a specially
designed bag to limit tarnishing between uses. Also, use gloves or a clean cotton cloth to handle special pieces.
If you use your silverplate flatware regularly, the washings will help keep it from tarnishing. After each piece is dry, try to limit
how much you handle it. The acid from your fingers will speed up the tarnish process. Since we use ours on a regular basis
we don’t have the tarnish issue.
Feel free to display your silverplate. Sunlight, though it aids in the tarnish process once it has begun, will not actually cause
your silverplate to tarnish. Make sure you read the do nots about displaying.
Do not wrap your vintage silverplate in wool, felt, or newspaper. These things will tarnish and eventually damage your flatware.
Do not use harsh detergents (like cleanser) on your silverplate.
Do not soak your silverplate in vinegar. It will eat all the silver right off the piece. Just say “no” to vinegar.
Do not use any old “silver polish.” Some are good and some will eventually destroy your flatware. We generally use Simichrome
or Howard’s to clean ours. (Make sure you wash them before eating off them after you apply any polish).
Do not store or set on naked wood. Natural fumes leaking from the wood will tarnish and, ultimately, damage your silverplate.
